Hastings Market is one of the larger and oldest Farmers' Markets in New Zealand. Purely food, it is an ‘experience’ not to be missed. Thousands of locals and busloads of visitors soak up the friendly, relaxed atmosphere of a traditional village market every Sunday morning. Starting with hot freshly roasted coffee and a choice of breakfast fare to feed the body locals and visitors can feed their senses while wandering at leisure,  listening to local music and discovering the diverse range of products grown and produced in Hawke’s Bay. See touch, smell and taste the goods, then buy knowing that they are fresh from the source.

Held under cover every Saturday morning in the Napier CBD, the Napier Urban Market is a smaller version of the Sunday Hastings Farmers’ Market. It has a good range of products and a cheerful ambience. Positioned inner city, it is a handy fresh food market.

The warm climate of Hawke’s Bay is conducive to all things living and has earned Hawke’s Bay the reputation as a leader in food and wine production. No matter when you visit, some food or wine is ‘in season’. Spring heralds the new asparagus, strawberries, lettuce and herbs. Summer kicks into life with sweetcorn, eggplant, berries, cherries and stone fruit. Autumn harvests apples, pears, avocados and olives while winter is the time for citrus fruit and hearty vegetables.

MARKET NEWS

Farmers Market 10th Birthday -
One of New Zealand’s original and biggest Farmers’ Markets is turning 10 years old with a day of celebrations planned on November 14th 2010.
The Hawke’s Bay Farmers’ Market was established in 2000 with a view to incubate, profile and assist the growth of small food businesses in the region  by creating a single destination were local growers and producers meet with customers.  Ten years later the Hastings market boasts more than 50 stallholders year round and up to 15 seasonal, drawing crowds every Sunday to the Hawkes Bay  A&P Showgrounds. People see, touch, smell, taste and buy fresh quality produce and genuine artisan products directly from the producer.  On Sunday 14th November 2010 the Hastings market will be celebrating the past 10 years, thanking customers for their support and acknowledging stallholders with a day of, giveaways, spot prizes, live music and children’s entertainment and stallholder specials.
Come and enjoy the atmosphere and help celebrate ten years of Hawke’s Bay growers and producers.

YES - On Sunday August 22nd approximately 29 Lions Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme companies from Hawke’s Bay are selling their wares or presenting to you their company’s services.
The YES Companies are formed at the beginning of the year involving many schools from our region. The students are given the challenge of forming a company, opening a bank account, appointing directorships, running formal meetings, earning start up money and then coming up with a marketable and innovative product or service. This involves a lot of testing and trialling, sourcing and redefining, packaging and processing and now on Sunday the very public sales and marketing. For some students it has been a long, arduous, eventful and for some a fun filled journey to get to the Farmers market to sell or present to the general public. We hope you can support the students on the day by engaging with them and enjoy the sheer energy, courage and enthusiasm that it takes to sell yourself and your idea.

Remember that Eftpos is available in both Halls this winter and we finally have the parking sorted - entrance off Kenilworth Road, exit out to Karamu Road. Stay warm!

Did you know?
That the grapefruit originated in Barbados as a natural cross between two other citrus that had been imported there from Asia in the 1600’s. Even more curious, grapefruit generally requires a hotter climate to thrive and fruit in than you find anywhere in NZ. So what about our grapefruit? Known overs as as New Zealand Grapefruit, it seems to have come via Australia (ytgif) direct from Asia and is completely different from (though related to) the fruit known overseas as grapefruit. Sir George Grey was the first to bring the plant to New Zealand. He gave some cuttings to John Morrison, who propagated them and for whom the well known variety Morrison’s seedless is named.
